Dalius Abaris (b. 1971) is best known for his work in staging high-profile national celebrations, official ceremonies and commemorations. He has more than two decades of professional experience as an event producer, director and scenic designer, specializing in the production of music and television projects.
Born in Dusetos, a little town in north Lithuania, he was introduced to the field of visual arts at an early age by his teachers at the Kazimieras Būga secondary school. He also attended music classes at the local school of arts. Later he studied choir conducting at the Juozas Tallat-Kelpša Conservatory. At the same time he contributed to the founding of the first private art galleries in Vilnius – Vartai and Langas – in the early 1990s. In 1992, when the first live music club for jazz and free improvised music, rock, country and blues was opened in Vilnius under the aegis of Langas he became one of its managers and acquired invaluable practical knowledge in producing musical, social and charity events. Since 1997, he has been active as a freelance event producer, concept and artistic director.
In cooperation with various Lithuanian governmental bodies and cultural institutions, he has conceived and implemented unique projects to celebrate momentous events in Lithuania’s history, to give substance to cultural memory and artistic achievements of Lithuanian people, to promote humanistic values and ideas. A number of his productions have drawn huge public interest and accolades, including performance @Hoffmann_The Nutcracker and musical-lighting improvisation Claviers of the Light for the opening of the Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009 at the Vilnius Palace of Concerts and Sports (2009), opening ceremony of Lithuania’s Presidency of the EU Council and audio-visual performance Sąšauka (Linkup) at the Grand Courtyard of Vilnius University (2013), project “Gloria to Lithuania” staged at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Song Day of the Song Festival “Vienybė težydi” (Unity May Blossom) at Vingis Park, commemorating the Centennial of the Restored State of Lithuania Gloria to Lithuania (2018), February 16th celebration “MKČ Code LT” at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre (2019); celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Lithuania’s Independence and a festive concert “22:44 Lietuvos laiku” (22:44 local time in Lithuania) at the Independence Square (2020).
For these and other projects he was awarded medal and the Cross of the Knight of the Order for Merits to Lithuania (2014 and 2018). His directorial debut in the field of opera – a production of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman at the open-air historic site of the Klaipėda shiplift (Klaipėda State Music Theatre, 2020) – was recognized by awarding him Lithuania’s highest theatre prize, Golden Cross of the Stage.
